Shrewsbury Steam Rally 2017 – Review
The Rally always seems to come and go so quickly, but with everything this year being so busy and working so well, partly due to the fantastic weather, it seems no time at all since we (that’s the royal we!) first started marking out the layout of the Rally at Onslow Park this year. But before our thoughts turn too far towards the 2018 Shrewsbury Steam Rally, let’s take a brief look back at the 2017 rally.

W&LLR Engine Makes its Debut at Onslow
A new attraction at our 2017 rally will be the Hunslet 2-6-2T locomotive No. 85 courtesy of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (W&LLR).
Hunslet 2-6-2T locomotive No. 85 was built in 1954 for service in Sierra Leone and purchased from a scrap dealer by the W&LLR in 1975. It’s been a feature exhibit in the summer-long festival of ‘Fire, Furnace and Steam’ at Blists Hill Victorian Town until Friday 25th August, after which it will then make its debut at Shrewsbury Steam Rally.
Mary Webb Anniversary
Our 2017 Rally will feature a joint exhibition with the Mary Webb Society, about the Shropshire poet and authoress, Mary Webb. Not just to commemorate the 90th anniversary of her death, but also the centenary of the publication of her book: Gone to Earth.

Field Gun Display at Shrewsbury Steam Rally
New for the 2017 Rally – The Portsmouth Action Field Gun Display Team will be performing a truly spectacular event called the South Africa Challenge, when a Command 1 tonne, 12-pounder field gun and limber (a two-wheeled cart designed to support the trail and the stock of a field carriage) will be raced across the main arena.
